NBA Rumors: 5 free agency destinations for Luol Deng
By John Buhler
For Deng to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, that would be contingent on what Mavericks small forward Chandler Parsons decides to do in 2016 NBA free agency. Parsons could skip town and Dallas would have a major void at the three that Deng could in theory appropriately fill.
Deng would probably cost less than what Parsons would command, as Parsons is still in his prime in his late 20s and Deng is just past it as he enters his early 30s. In all honesty if Deng has health in 2016-17, the Mavericks would be able to stay in the Western Conference Playoffs picture with him starting at the three instead of Parsons.
Realistically, Dallas will remain a playoff caliber team as long as future Hall of Fame power forward Dirk Nowitzki is on the Mavericks’ roster. Parsons will probably re-sign with the Mavericks, but in the chance that he does leave the Mavericks, Deng is a suitable replacement out on the wing for Dallas.
Owner Mark Cuban would probably be able to use some of the money he would save on signing Deng over Parsons to be able to get a great rotational player that could potentially help Nowitzki win one last title before calling it a career. However, this is all contingent on if Parsons leave and if Deng has his health.
