5 NFL teams that could use an upgrade at quarterback
By John Buhler
Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly’s decision to trade for Sam Bradford to be his quarterback in his up-tempo offense didn’t make a lot of sense when it went down at the start of the 2015 NFL calendar year. Now with Kelly being the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, what does new Eagles head coach Doug Pederson have in store for Bradford as his Week 1 starter?
While Bradford did win the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma and did go No. 1 overall to the then St. Louis Rams in the 2010 NFL Draft, he’s never lived up to the hype as an NFL passer. Bradford has had an injury-riddled NFL career and doesn’t have the arm strength to air it out in an NFL offense.
Potentially he could work in Pederson’s dink-and-dunk offense he learned from Andy Reid during their time together in Kansas City, but the Eagles aren’t going to do much with a sub-par quarterback in Bradford under center.
Philadelphia could trade and draft their next franchise quarterback in the 2016 NFL Draft, but even Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, or Paxton Lynch are going to remedy all the mayhem Kelly created in building his up-tempo offense during his three years with the Eagles.
In essence, the Eagles have to play the cards they were dealt for at least the next year or so. Bradford is good enough to start in the league, but hasn’t proven that he can both stay healthy longterm or lead an NFC team to the NFL Playoffs. The Eagles aren’t a playoff caliber team until they upgrade the quarterback position over Bradford.
