5 NFL teams that could use an upgrade at quarterback
By John Buhler
It’s obvious that the Cleveland Browns are going to be drafting their third potential franchise quarterback in five years with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Brandon Weeden busted as the Browns’ first round pick in 2012 and Johnny Manziel failed after being their first round pick in 2014.
Cleveland will almost certainly take either Wentz out of North Dakota State or Goff out of California with the No. 2 overall selection. Both pro-style pocket passers feel like capable NFL starters as they enter the 2016 NFL Draft and Cleveland will wisely take one of the two franchise quarterbacks available this spring in the draft.
For now, the Browns’ Week 1 starter is the veteran journeyman Josh McCown. McCown has played well the last few years as a borderline starter in the league for the Bears, the Buccaneers, and the Browns, respectively. He’s not bad, but McCown isn’t a long-term solution under center for any NFL team. McCown is also getting up there in age.
While Cleveland could still trade or sign other starting quarterbacks in the league this offseason like Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Jets, Robert Griffin, III formerly of the Washington Redskins, or Colin Kaepernick of the 49ers, it makes the most sense for new Browns head coach Hue Jackson to go with either Goff or Wentz at No. 2 in the NFL Draft and develop him into the franchise quarterback Cleveland hasn’t had since Bernie Kosar.
