5 NFL teams that could use an upgrade at quarterback
By John Buhler
The Los Angeles Rams are close to being relevant in the NFC. They have a great defense led by All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald and a transcendent young talent at running back in 2015 NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year Todd Gurley. The Rams can hold their own in the brutal NFC West and should be one of five teams vying for a 2016 playoff berth that didn’t qualify last year.
However, the biggest problem that the Rams face entering 2016 is that they may have the worst quarterback situation in the entire National Football League. Whether it’s Case Keenum or Nick Foles under center, the Rams are atrocious at moving the football aerially, as the Rams had the worst passing offense in the NFL in 2015.
With the Rams relocating to Los Angeles, one would think that they would look to upgrade the quarterback position before entering the second biggest media market in the country. In a city full of stars, it makes tremendous sense for the Rams to have a star at quarterback.
The problem is that neither Keenum or Foles fit under that umbrella and that the Rams would have to trade up significantly in the first round to draft either Goff or Wentz in the 2016 NFL Draft. Los Angeles could look to acquire someone like former Heisman Trophy winner and Washington quarterback Griffin, but his arrival may not make the Rams a certain playoff team.
In a quarterback-driven league, it seems that the position itself is the only thing holding back the Rams from making their first trip to the NFC Playoffs since 2004. If the Rams can get anyone near peak Marc Bulger under center in the next few years, the Rams could contend for a Super Bowl berth with that dynamic corps that have intact. If any team needs to upgrade its quarterback group, it’s the Rams.
