College Football Top 25: Spring practice 2016 edition
Florida was 5-0 before a matchup with No. 6 LSU on the road and the Tigers ended up ruining a potential perfect season. The Gators struggled after quarterback Will Grier was suspended for illegal substance use and Treon Harris was just not nearly as effective under center.
The Gators finished the 2015 season with a 10-4 record and received a thrashing at the hands of Michigan in the Citrus Bowl, 41-7. It was a sour note to finish the season on, but Jim McElwain’s first year as head coach of Florida was successful. Winning 10 games and making it to the Citrus Bowl against a fellow up-and-coming program was great for Florida.
Florida’s success on the field translated into recruiting success as it finished with the 10th-best 2016 football class, according to Scout.com.
Flipping four-star wide out Tyrie Cleveland from Houston on signing day and locking up guys like quarterback Feleipe Franks, defensive end Antonneous Clayton, receiver Freddie Swain and safety Chauncey Gardner — all high four-stars — makes 2015 look scary for opposing teams.
Franks, instead of Harris, could start at quarterback and 1,000-yard rusher Kelvin Taylor will be back for his senior campaign. The offense will be young, but with the talented new wide outs and All-American quarterback, it could see a resurgence.
As for the defense, it’s losing a handful of key pieces, but with the roster already in place and recruiting class coming in, it’s reloading.
