Ranking starting quarterbacks for each NFL team
14. Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders
The Raiders have found their franchise quarterback, and are poised to challenge for an AFC West title with an improving roster around him. Oakland was fortunate to have Carr fall to the second round of the 2014 draft, as he is now comfortably looking like the top quarterback from the class.
Carr improved drastically across the board in his sophomore season, throwing for just shy of 4,000 yards and 32 touchdowns with 13 interceptions and a rating of 91.1. The Carr to Amari Cooper connection got off to a thrilling start and should help the Raiders have a dynamic offense for years to come. If the Raiders get a little better offensive line play, Carr’s numbers should continue to improve.
In particular, Carr looked much more comfortable and confident running Oakland’s offense last season. Carr started to throw the ball downfield much more with positive results, as his yards per attempt mark jumped from 5.5 to 7.0 last season.
Carr’s accuracy was also much improved, as he nearly has a complete NFL game already. Look for Carr to make the jump to a top 10 NFL quarterback over the next year or two, particularly if he can reduce his interception total.
