Ranking starting quarterbacks for each NFL team
28. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers
If new head coach Chip Kelly is going to be successful in San Francisco, he’ll have to figure out the quarterback situation quickly.
The once-promising Kaepernick has put up worse numbers every year since 2012 and regressed heavily last season without the tutelage of former head coach Jim Harbaugh. Kaepernick posted a quarterback rating of 78.5 with six touchdowns and five interceptions in nine games before losing his job to Blaine Gabbert and going to IR.
However, Kaepernick does get the nod over others like Sanchez and McCown, as there still may be some slight hope for him to turn things around. Kelly’s quick-read offense could benefit Kaepernick, as his biggest weakness recently has been poor decision-making.
Kaepernick’s time in San Francisco may be over, as non-stop trade rumors have surrounded him since the start of free agency. Denver has shown plenty of interest, and the rebuilding 49ers will probably be happy to oblige, as Kaepernick doesn’t look like the long-term answer.
If the 49ers are forced to turn to Gabbert, they will be right up there with the Jets and Browns as the worst quarterback situation in the NFL. Wentz or Goff could possibly be rookie starters in San Francisco, as at least one of them will be available at No. 7.
