The basic tenets of Stan Van Gundy’s system are coming into place. Van Gundy is now looking to surround center Andre Drummond with shooters, like he did in Orlando with Dwight Howard. More than anything, though, the Pistons need depth to fill out their roster. Furkan Korkmaz, an 18-year old originally from Turkey, can help that process.

At 6-7, Korkmaz is a potential “3-and-D” wing, exactly the kind of player Van Gundy will covet. Over the past two seasons, Korkmaz has knocked down 44.4 percent of his 151 three-point attempts across all competitions. He’s also shown himself as a capable attacker off the bounce to beat closeouts on the perimeter. Defensively, Korkmaz needs to be more consistent with his effort, but the physical tools are there for him to be a flexible defender in the NBA. Using his height and quickness, Korkmaz can develop into a wing that can guard multiple positions.

It’s possible that Korkmaz won’t be ready to come to the NBA right away because he’s so young, in which case the Pistons could let him develop overseas for a season before bringing him over to join maturing wing Stanley Johnson on the perimeter.
