NFL Rumors: 5 trade destinations for AJ McCarron
By Jacob Yturri
No. 4 Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams are a team that needs direction at quarterback. After watching Nick Foles and Case Keenum try to mimic what an NFL starting quarterback looks like last season, Rams fans everywhere are praying for a miracle.
That miracle may just come in the form of AJ McCarron. The former Alabama quarterback seems to have something that Keenum and Foles do not possess, the ability to not throw gut-wrenching interceptions.
While McCarron would have to do some developing if acquired by the Rams, he very much could develop into a top-tier starter for the newly relocated franchise.
Scheme Fit:
The Rams don’t do anything particularly special on offense. Los Angeles have spent several draft picks trying to find a difference maker at the wide receiver position, and to this point that position is still a work in progress. The team did find a franchise running back in Todd Gurley last season.
Moving forward, this should be a team that runs first and tries to beat other teams at the line of scrimmage. If McCarron came to town, his primary job would be to make third down conversions, and to make opposing defenses be afraid of loading the box. At this point in his career, he should be able to accomplish both tasks quite often.
Team Need:
The bottom dwellers of the NFC West certainly need a consistent player at quarterback. When the team starts playing before its new home crowd fans next season, it would be nice to finally have a team capable of winning games. The best way to win over, or to create a fan base, is by winning and winning a lot. If the Rams believe McCarron has the goods, then they need to trade for him.
Ability for the Rams to acquire McCarron:
If the Rams could acquire McCarron without selling their soul, then absolutely, the team should pull the trigger. Honestly, if the general manager of the Rams should call the Bengals and offer a fifth round pick, and give the Bengals choice between Foles and Keenum. Neither Foles or Keenum will ever be a solid starter, but they both have shown the potential to be acceptable backups.
