The ref delivered a heavy hit on North Dakota’s Drake Caggiula after the latter scored vs Michigan

The North Dakota Fighting Hawks and the Michigan Wolverines faced off on Saturday evening in the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament quarterfinals with Michigan trying to land some big shots on the No. 3 seed in the tournament. However, it was North Dakota and Drake Caggiula that struck first and it wasn’t the Wolverines, but rather the referee, that laid the biggest hit on the play.

Caggiula streaked down the ice on the left wing and then cut to the middle to fire a shot, but that goalie was able to make the save. Caggiula stayed in pursuit though as the shot deflected back out and calmly tucked the rebound into the back of the net. However, as Caggiula skated around the back of the net while he celebrated, he ran into one of the referees and the ref was having none of that apparently as he delivered a big check to the North Dakota goal-scorer:

Someone see if that ref still has any eligibility left! Some college hockey team out there could certainly use an enforcer of that caliber.

Caggiula’s goal gave the Fighting Hawks a 1-0 lead early in the first period. But you’d have to say that, rather than North Dakota, it’s the refs who had the physical advantage in the early-goings of the game.
