New York Mets. Steven Matz. 24. player. 3. . P

As if the Mets needed another good arm to go with Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard (more on him later), the Mets added another arm from their farm system in Steven Matz.

Matz was the team’s second round pick in 2009 and had Tommy John surgery, but recovered from that to be one of the best prospects in the game.

Then he came up to the majors. Matz battled injury in the majors as well but went 4-0 in six starts with a 2.27 ERA. He then had three starts in the playoffs, going 0-1 but keeping the Mets in the game on their road to the World Series.

Matz gives the Mets another power arm, this time on the left side, with a 94 MPH fastball, a curve and a changeup.

He struck out about eight batters per nine which is on par with his average throughout the minor leagues. He may not be as a dominant as Harvey or deGrom, but he doesn’t have to be.

If Matz emerges along with the return of Zach Wheeler, the Mets rotation may be even better than they were last year and that’s a scary thought for the rest of the NL.
