60 best sitcoms of all time
37. Sex and the City
Sex and the City has become what everyone thinks of when they now consider a female ensemble sitcom. That’s how much Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda took over when HBO introduced audiences to them in 1998. The series spawned two movies, the CW wanting to adapt the prequel The Carrie Diaries, and there’s even a Sex and the City-themed slot machine.
The series earned seven Emmy Awards and eight Golden Globe Awards, including Lead Actress in a Comedy for Sarah Jessica Parker and Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Cynthia Nixon. But the real impact of Sex and the City was that it became a cultural phenomenon with women (and many men) around the world. People became obsessed with who the characters were dating and what they were wearing. It became as much about the style as anything else. This was one of the first shows where we saw an intersection between TV and fashion, which has now become a given with later series like Scandal and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce (which has itself been compared to SATC).
In the late 80s and into the 90′, we had Designing Women and Murphy Brown; in the late 90s and into the 2000s, we had Sex and the City. Completely different shows for completely different eras, but still proving that there was plenty of girl power to be found in the American sitcom.
