58. Easy Money

Here’s a show that definitely falls under the category of “gone too soon.” Easy Money was a quirky family comedy created by Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, who had won an Emmy Award for their work on Northern Exposure. The series was part of The CW’s attempt to revive their Sunday nights by handing airtime over to Media Rights Capital, which would go on to produce House of Cards and Sense8 for Netflix.

So why did Easy Money only last one season — and only eight episodes out of its ordered 13? Count this as one of those shows that was so unique it was almost too good. It was populated with honestly unique characters portrayed by a wonderful cast. Laurie Metcalf anchored the entire series as Bobette Buffkin, the matriarch of a small-town payday loans business, while the MVP of the show was a pre-Agent X Jeff Hephner playing her dependable son Morgan, perhaps the only member of the family with a moral compass.

But Easy Money is full of familiar faces. Nick Searcy (Justified) played Bobette’s husband Roy, with Katie Lowes (Scandal) and Jay R. Ferguson (now leading his own family on The Real O’Neals) as Morgan’s siblings Brandy and Cooper. And Marsha Thomason (White Collar) played his love interest. There was so much talent here and truly fresh material. It just never got the acclaim — or even chance to breathe — that it deserved.
