19. Arrested Development
Arrested Development features possibly the weirdest, most out of control family in a TV sitcom (the Archers from Archer might be a close second). It also collects some of the funniest people ever assembled on one show in the last decade. You knew the majority of these people were funny before you ever tuned into the series, and by the end of an episode you were laughing at all of them.
Honestly, Jessica Walter and Jeffrey Tambor should just be required to work together all the time, because both are constantly funny, and they’ve knocked it out of the park in both of their recent team-ups. This show really could not have been more perfectly cast. There were three actors going delightfully for broke: Will Arnett, Tony Hale and David Cross, all of whom sold every joke they were handed. Jason Bateman and Michael Cera played fantastic straight men. Add in Portia de Rossi and Alia Shawkat and everything just clicked into place. We even have to give props to Ron Howard, who served as executive producer and a perfect narrator.
We’ve got to dock the show a couple of points for its lackluster revival season on Netflix (hopefully it will rebound when the next season premieres there later this year). But the original run of Arrested Development definitely earns a spot amongst the best sitcoms of all time.
