Carolina Hurricanes – Jordan Staal

The Carolina Hurricanes are an extremely young team. Because of that, they don’t have any players who appear to be future hall of famers. Defenseman Justin Faulk is far too young to judge yet. Center Jordan Staal is probably the most likely one, but even he doesn’t have a strong case.

Staal’s defense has been the calling card for his career. He placed in the Selke Trophy voting in each of his first seven seasons in the league, though he hasn’t received a Selke Trophy vote since the lockout shortened 2012-2013 season. Staal also has a Stanley Cup on his resume, though he was more of a role player with the 2008-2009 Penguins.

Entering March 30, Jordan Staal has 388 points in 684 games and 36 points in 73 playoff games. On paper, that looks alright. However, it’s worth noting that he plays over 18 minutes per game, so it’s not that impressive. He is a defensive center who would likely be a second or third line center on a contender.

Unlike Justin Faulk, Staal has at least placed consistently in a major award voting and was even a Selke Trophy finalist in 2009-2010. Faulk has placed in the Norris Trophy voting just once and that was when he finished 22nd in 2014-2015.
