#4: Terrell Suggs, 10th overall pick of the 2003 NFL Draft

The 2003 NFL Draft will be remembered as the one that Steelers safety Troy Polamalu was drafted in. However, the Ravens got an equally talented player in Terrell Suggs. He is sixth in sacks since entering the league in 2003, despite missing a season and a half due to Achilles injuries. With 106.5 career sacks, he is Baltimore’s all-time leader in sacks.

Even when Suggs has had down years, it’s not a coincidence that the rushers opposite him have had strong years. In recent years, Suggs has replaced Ray Lewis as the vocal leader of Baltimore. He makes himself an easy target with his controversial opinions (namely his hatred of quarterbacks), but Suggs can back up his talk. Suggs was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2003 and the Defensive Player of the Year in 2011.

Much like safety Ed Reed led Baltimore’s secondary and linebacker Ray Lewis led their defense, Suggs has led the pass rush. He consistently draws the focus of every offensive line and has had a ton of success despite facing double teams. Those double teams tend to open things up for other Ravens. Paul Kruger is a recent example.

While Suggs doesn’t have Hall of Fame credentials and he is in decline, he is without question one of the best draft picks that the Ravens have ever made.
