With the recent signing of Jared Cook, finding an impact player at the tight end position is no longer an immediate need for the Green Bay Packers.

Cook has averaged 44 receptions and 571.5 receiving yards per year since his rookie season in 2009, and will serve as a difference maker for Aaron Rodgers in the passing game. In addition to acquiring Cook, 24-year old tight end Richard Rodgers more than doubled his receiving output from his rookie season last year while recording 58 receptions and eight touchdown catches.

But while the temporary need has been filled, the Packers still need to target a tight end at some point in this draft. If Western Kentucky’s Tyler Higbee is still on the board by the time they make their third selection of the fourth round, they would be wise to pull the trigger on the raw, yet talented, prospect.

Higbee was recruited by Western Kentucky as a wide receiver but transferred to tight end following his freshman year. Despite making this switch, though, he did not start until his senior season. Higbee made the most of his time in the spotlight, catching 38 passes for 563 yards and eight touchdowns — tied for the most among the nation’s tight ends — in just nine games.

Given that Cook is only locked up for one season, Higbee could serve as a long-term solution at the position.
