When the Houston Texans signed a potential Pro Bowl running back and what they hope to be their first-ever franchise quarterback this offseason, providing these two with adequate protection up front became an instant necessity. With an offensive line facing with several questions heading into next season, this becomes a serious concern.

Offensive tackle Duane Brown is coming off of surgery for a season-ending quad injury, and will turn 31 this year. In addition, center Ben Jones and offensive guard Brandon Brooks left the team during free agency, although the Texans did sign former Chief Jeff Allen to fill the void created by Brooks’ departure.

With so many needs to fill on the offensive line, Houston would be wise to target a versatile lineman that can step in at a variety of roles. LSU’s Jerald Hawkins fits that mold perfectly.

As a junior on LSU’s offensive line this past season, Hawkins helped pave the way for a 1,953-yard rushing performance by sophomore running back Leonard Fournette — the second-greatest single-season rushing output in SEC history. He also displayed an impressive pass-blocking ability that was overshadowed by the Tigers’ dismal passing attack.

And although Hawkins was a three-year starter at tackle while at LSU, his agility and ability to maul defenders in the running game make him a candidate to make a seamless transition to guard if necessary.
