Ozzie Newsome was drafted with the 23rd pick of the 1978 draft. During his rookie season, he won the Browns’ Offensive Player of the Year award, which was the first time a rookie won the award in 25 seasons.

Newsome made the Pro Bowl in 1981, 1984, and 1985. He played in the NFL for 13 seasons, and never missed a game during his career. In other words, he was the definition of an ‘ironman’ player.

In 1984, Newsome set the Browns franchise record for receiving yards in a game. His record stood for 29 years until Josh Gordon broke the record. When Newsome retired he finished with 7,980 yards and 47 touchdowns. Additionally, in 1999, Newsome was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

After his playing career came to a finish, Newsome tried his hand in football operations. In 2002, he was named the general manager of the Baltimore Ravens, which made him the first African-American to hold that position in the NFL.

In his tenure as the Ravens general manager, Newsome has won the Super Bowl in 2001 and 2013.
