Houston Texans: 5 best NFL Draft picks of all-time
Andre Johnson (2003: first round, third overall)
The 2003 NFL Draft featured one of the biggest toss-ups at the wide receiver position in recent memory.
The Detroit Lions held the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, while the Houston Texans sat right behind them at No. 3. Both teams were in the market for a wide receiver, and there were two players that appeared to have tremendous upside: Michigan State’s Carlos Rogers and Miami’s Andre Johnson.
Fortunately for the Texans, Detroit selected Rogers with the second overall pick. Rogers, who dealt with a plethora of off-the-field issues during and after his career, is considered one of the biggest busts in draft history. He appeared in just 15 games during his career, compiling 440 receiving yards and four touchdowns over the course of three seasons.
Johnson, meanwhile, spent 12 seasons in Houston and is widely regarded as one of the top receivers of his generation.
After his second year in the NFL, the 6-foot-3, 219-pound wide-out made the first of seven career Pro Bowl appearances.
Johnson amassed 1,012 receptions for 13,597 yards and 64 touchdowns during his 12 years with the Texans, leading the league in receptions and receiving yards on two occasions. He ranks among the top-10 all-time in both categories.
Despite being an unsigned free agent heading toward the 2016 NFL Draft, Johnson is adamant that he is not done in the NFL. Given his leadership qualities and ability to produce — albeit not at a Pro Bowl-level — there should be a spot for him somewhere in the league.
