New Orleans Saints: 5 best draft picks all-time
By John Buhler
Offensive tackle Willie Roaf spent the bulk of his 13-year Hall of Fame NFL career with the Saints. Roaf was the No. 8 overall selection made by New Orleans in the 1993 NFL Draft and he spent his first nine seasons with the Saints before playing his last four with the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC.
Roaf made 11 Pro Bowls and six All-Pro first teams, including six Pro Bowls and three All-Pro teams while with the Saints. He made both the All-Decade Team for the 1990s and the 2000s. Roaf has been enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame as one of the nastiest offensive tackles to have played the game.
While he did star in the Saints’ backyard at Louisiana Tech, Roaf was lightly recruited coming out of high school. By the time he entered the 1993 NFL Draft, there was no secret how dominating Roaf could be as an NFL offensive tackle.
Though his Saints’ career ended abruptly after a season-ending shoulder injury in 2001, his ability to play another solid four years with the Chiefs helped ensure his obvious selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012. Simply put, Roaf is one of the very best to play for the Saints.
