Dallas Cowboys: 5 worst draft picks of all-time
By Randy Gurzi
An excellent return specialist and corner who recorded eight interceptions at Kentucky State, Rod Hill never lived up to his first round status after being selected 25th overall by the Dallas Cowboys in 1982.
Initially, Hill was a wide receiver at Iowa before transferring to Kentucky State, where the coaching staff felt he was better suited to play defense. That move ended up being enough to get him selected as a member of the Kentucky Football Hall of Fame.
What it didn’t do was earn him a long career as a Cowboy, as Hill managed only two seasons in Dallas before being traded to the Buffalo Bills for a fifth, sixth and twelfth round pick. Not exactly the return on investment the team expected with their 25th overall choice.
During his two years in Dallas, Hill recorded two interceptions, but never was able to move to the starting lineup. After missing tackles that led to long touchdowns Hill lost his job as the team’s nickel corner. Not long after that his teammates started to turn on him, which ended the coaching staff’s patience with the young man.
His NFL career lasted only until 1987, but he did manage to play in the CFL from 1988-1992 for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
