player. 18.
The Celtics’ arsenal of draft assets means they can afford to take a few home run swings. Labissiere definitely has that potential, although he might take a few years to get there. Even though he struggled early and often at Kentucky, averaging just 15.8 minutes per game and picking up 7.6 fouls per 40 minutes, Labissiere definitely displayed reasons to live up to his high recruiting ranking in his lone season at Kentucky.

Labissiere’s defensive tools are all there, although he has a long way to go in terms of fundamentals and toughness. He has a solid 7’2″ wingspan, excellent quickness and he has good blocking instincts, averaging 4.2 blocks per 40 minutes. Skal also has shown the potential to be a good shooter from range, flashing a very fluid jumper, and he’s very difficult to stop in transition.

Skal has received a lot of criticism for his disappointing play this year, but the bottom line is that he’s still learning the game of basketball after coming from a very bad situation, and a lot of the stuff that he struggles with (feel for the game, fouling, strength) are things that improve through experience and maturity. The Celtics aren’t afraid of development projects, and Labissiere could be a nice project for Boston to take on, getting a couple of years primarily with the Maine Red Claws and then joining the team full-time as an energy big who can stretch the floor.
