The Grizzlies need to start thinking about long-term reinforcements for Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, especially given how crazy this season has been in terms of injuries. They don’t necessarily need instant impact, but someone who can provide a little scoring punch as a third big might be a nice fit.

Stone could be that guy, and the Grizzlies’ strength as a rebounding team when healthy could take the pressure off of his relatively poor individual rebounding numbers (defensive rebounding rate of 14.5). Stone has excellent hands and is a brute down low, a fierce offensive rebounder who finishes incredibly well through contact and finishes at the line, too (76.1 percent). He also showed promise in the pick-and-pop as the season went on at Maryland, hinting at potential for a more diverse overall offensive game.

Stone has some development to do on the defensive end, but he already is a decent shot-blocker, posting a 7.1 percent block rate and using his deceptive mobility to overcome a lack of athletic hops. Stone might not have the foot speed to defend adequately on the perimeter, but at the very least he’ll be a strong post defender and last line of defense. Stone definitely fits the grit-and-grind mentality, and if he’s the energizing third big coming off the bench behind Randolph and Gasol, the Grizzlies suddenly become much scarier.
