26. player. 81. Though the trend of Zimmerman to the Clippers

Though the trend of Zimmerman to the Clippers has been broken, he won’t fall far, because the Raptors could also get good use out of Zimmerman’s versatile offensive skill set. Toronto likes its finesse big men, and that looks like it will be how Zimmerman operates in the NBA as well. Zimmerman looks like a solid, versatile scoring threat, a guy with nifty post moves and a fluid release, even though he rarely got chances to step out beyond the arc. There’s also a good chance that Zimmerman can eventually be a good defensive player, thanks to the shot-blocking effort (3.0 blocks per 40 minutes), and excellent defensive rebounding.

Zimmerman is incredibly raw still, and a lot of that stems from the fact that his college career was basically a year zero thanks to the absolute chaos of his lone year at UNLV. Head coach Dave Rice’s lack of offensive structure often relegated Zimmerman to fighting for scraps on putbacks and drop-offs, and he was somewhat frozen out of possessions because he’s not a dominating screen-setter, and if he wasn’t freeing up UNLV’s isolation-loving guards, he didn’t have much use. In a more structured offensive setting, Zimmerman should get used in more advantageous ways, which should benefit his development. At the very least, the Raptors have Raptors 905, a good D-League squad that will likely allow him the opportunity to spend time with a real NBA-level distributor in Delon Wright.
