4. 1985-1986 Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics ruled the 1980’s along with their rivals the Los Angeles Lakers. None of the Celtics teams were quite as dominant as the 1985-1986 Celtics. People think that the “super team” idea was started with the Miami Heat when LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade all played for them at the same time. That’s cute. The Celtics had three Hall of Famers starting for them in Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parrish and they had a fourth coming in off the bench in Bill Walton. They finished the season with a 67-15 record and went 15-3 during the playoffs to win the title.

Larry Bird led the Celtics that season with 25.8 points per game, 9.8 rebounds per game, and 6.8 assists per game. Bird earned the NBA MVP that season and was also named the MVP of the Finals after the Celtics beat the Houston Rockets in six games. Kevin McHale averaged 21.3 points per game with 2.1 blocks per game and 8.1 rebounds per game. Robert Parrish was a beast in the paint, averaging 16.1 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game.

Bill Walton might have played under 20 minutes a game, but his leadership and paint presence helped lead the team to the NBA Finals. He was also their heart and soul. At times, he showed even more emotion than the cheerleaders. His knees sadly didn’t hold up and let him play a major role on the court, but he was an excellent leader off of it.
