Marvel offers first look at Civil War II

Marvel fans will be asked to pick sides again this summer in Civil War II.

In just a few weeks, Marvel superheroes will go toe to toe in Captain America: Civil War. In the comics, we’ve already been there, done that, but the cape and costume crowd is getting ready to throw down for a second time in Civil War II.

While the story itself will get underway on Free Comic Book Day (that’s Saturday, May 7), Marvel just released the first preview pages from Civil War II #1, which hits stores on June 1. Written by acclaimed scribe Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by rising star David Marquez, the series will see the hero community divided once again, with Iron Man and Captain Marvel leading the two sides.

The stakes sound like they might be even higher than in the first Civil War. Thanks to a new Inhuman named Ulysses, the power to actually predict the future has become a reality. Now the question is what to do with it.

As Marvel says:

"Divided amongst themselves, will they use Ulysses to prevent danger before it happens? Or should they allow the future to unfold unaltered? As his new powers send shockwaves rippling across the Marvel Universe – battle lines will be drawn. Do you stand with Iron Man? Or will you side with Captain Marvel?"

In an interesting twist, Tony Stark is taking the “protect the future” stance that Ulysses’ insight shouldn’t be acted on. That seems to be a little out of character for the self-styled futurist of the Marvel Universe, so it will be a real test for Bendis to deliver his motivations in a way that rings true to readers.

As promised, here are four preview pages from Civil War II #1:

If nothing else, it should be a lot of fun seeing which heroes end up on which side and why. Look for Civil War II #1 on June 1 wherever new comics are sold.
