New York Giants: 5 best draft picks of all-time
By Randy Gurzi
There may be others who have tried to use the nickname, but there’s really only one L.T. Outside linebacker Lawrence Taylor was the most feared pass rusher of his time, and to this day players who excel at harassing quarterbacks are compared to the second overall selection out of North Carolina in 1981.
Taylor was named to 10 All-Pro teams as well as 10 Pro Bowls during his 13-year career in New York. The 1980’s All-Decade team member has more awards to go along with his name than most people could list, which included three AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Awards as well as the 1986 NFL MVP Award.
The 245-pound linebacker had sensational speed and strength and used them well together as he amassed 1,088 career tackles, 132.5 sacks and nine interceptions. His incredible play on the defensive side of the ball was vital in the Giants winning two Super Bowls during his tenure.
Taylor was able to form a strong relationship with the often rough-around-the-edges coach Bill Parcells, who was fond of the fire and effort Taylor brought to every game for his football team.
Unfortunately for the talented Taylor, his name has also often come up for the wrong reasons, which have included poor decisions with women and drugs.
However, as a pure football player, no draft pick has been as successful for Big Blue as L.T.
