2. They lost next years pick

As mentioned, many expect Wentz to be a bit of a project. That should be no shock; he was injured most of last year, has only made 23 collegiate starts, and all were against FCS quality players. But the Rams aren’t supposed to win right away with this strategy and they probably won’t.

The downside to not winning with a young quarterback you traded your draft away for is that losing this upcoming season is as pointless as it gets. Unless the Rams make a Super Bowl run, no one is going to care about them until at least 2018 — which is perfect because that’s the next time they’ll have a first-round pick. There’s always the option of trading for one, but that’s pretty unlikely.

Los Angles wasting 2016 to develop talent for the future will result in nothing — literally nothing. They won’t go to the playoffs, they won’t get a top draft pick to add another stud prospect to their core and they’ll have wasted a year in the most literal of senses.

Sure, with guys like Aaron Donald, and Robert Quinn the Rams have a better core to build a quarterback around than Tennessee does right now, but they did just lose James Laurinitis, Chris Long, and TJ McDonald, all starters on their defense, and now they will have to be very shifty in how they replace them, especially with no future to look to in the draft next year.
