Sam Montgomery (2013: third round, 95th overall)

When LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery fell to the Houston Texans at the 95th overall pick in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the organization believed it had found one of the steals of the draft. Instead, they had drafted one of the year’s biggest busts.

Montgomery emerged as a star at LSU, playing opposite of top-10 pick Barkevious Mingo on the defensive line as part of a defense that led the Tigers to an SEC Championship in 2012. The 6-foot-3, 262-pound defensive end was named a first team All-American that season, earning first team All-SEC honors in both 2012 and 2013.

Despite an impressive college career, though, teams were wary of drafting Montgomery. Questions regarding his work ethic caused his draft stock to slip, as did a lack of improvement during his final season at LSU.

As Houston attempted to move Montgomery from defensive end to outside linebacker, these concerns evolved into a legitimate problem. The third-round pick struggled to adjust to his new role, with rumors of a lack of commitment adding to his troubles.

In October of his rookie season, Montgomery and two other players were cut after reportedly smoking marijuana at the team hotel. He has yet to take a regular season snap in the NFL.

If not for the fact that the Texans only wasted a third round pick on Montgomery, he would find himself higher on this list.
