Houston Texans: 5 worst NFL Draft picks of all-time
Travis Johnson (2005: first round, 16th overall)
The selection of Travis Johnson with the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft marked the first of two disappointing first round defensive line picks within a span of three years for the Houston Texans.
Johnson was a highly-touted prospect coming out of high school that failed to live up to expectations during his first three years with the Florida State Seminoles. In 2004, though, the 6-foot-3, 314-pound defensive tackle boosted his draft stock with a breakout senior season. Johnson earned first team All-ACC honors that year after recording 50 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss.
Despite this impressive performance during his final college season, though, he would fail to find much success at the NFL level.
To the contrary of the first two players on this list, Johnson received plenty of opportunities to make an impact. He appeared in 54 games during four seasons in Houston, making 38 starts. But to the dismay of Texans fans, he would record only two sacks during this time.
Johnson would sign with the San Diego Chargers in 2009 and spend the next two years with the organization before his retirement following the 2010 season.
The Texans passed on a long list of future Pro Bowlers when they drafted Johnson, including two-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers and first-team All-Pro offensive guard Logan Mankins.
