East. Dallas Cowboys. 3. player. 123. . NFC

The 2015 Dallas Cowboys had a disastrous season to say the very least. Once franchise quarterback Tony Romo broke his collarbone in Week 2 of the season, Dallas plummeted in the NFC and finished with the worst record in the conference at 4-12.

Dallas will have the No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, but the Cowboys may not have the luxury of landing either California’s Jared Goff or North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz with their draft selection. Both quarterback prospects are expected to go one-two to the Los Angeles Rams and the Browns in some order.

With Romo at quarterback, Dallas can contend for a trip to the Super Bowl in 2016. Without him, Dallas would be lucky to win five games. That’s where Hoyer can come in and make a difference. Dallas may need to look for a more long-term solution at quarterback as Romo enters the twilight of his prime, but Hoyer can still win the Cowboys games as a backup.

Since the current collective bargaining agreement between the NFLPA and the NFL has limited contact between players and coaching staffs, offensive line play has been the biggest casualty in this labor agreement. Though Dallas does boast a top five offensive line in the league, the Cowboys had arguably the worst collection of backup quarterbacks of any team in 2016.

All it takes is one missed blocking assignment and Romo could be back in a sling on the sidelines. Dallas should be proactive in upgrading their backup quarterback position. There are few better than Hoyer and it would be wise of Dallas to grab him before somebody else does, unless Hoyer can sign somewhere to compete for a starting job. Dallas is likely the best backup quarterbacking job for Hoyer this offseason.
