1. Outstanding player development

If there is one thing that Brooks does remarkably well as a head coach, it’s outstanding player development. Durant, Westbrook, Harden, and Ibaka all became stars under his tutelage. Players like Steven Adams and Reggie Jackson improved to prominent starting roles on playoff teams under Brooks’ watch.

Washington doesn’t have a particularly deep roster, but it does have many promising players under the age of 26. Brooks could not only make Wall and Beal All-NBA talents, but Porter, Oubre, and Markieff Morris are a few of the many who could benefit from Brooks’ strong player development background.

Should any of those players improve in year one of the Brooks era in D.C. along with Gortat staying strong in the low post offensively, Washington could have themselves a team capable of possibly getting home court advantage in the first round of the 2017 NBA Playoffs.

It’s not talked about as freely as pace-and-space and commitment to defensive excellence, but all great teams have strong winning cultures stemming from elite player development. X’s and O’s aren’t Brooks area of expertise, but he will find a way to get the most out of his players as a top-10 head coach in terms of player development.

Washington needs an injection of what it takes to be a winning franchise before things start to go southward. Brooks is the right man for the head coaching gig with the Wizards. His previous experience with the Thunder and his player development program should make this an easy choice for the Wizards to make this summer.
