5. Hoyer has a winning record as a starter over the past three seasons

For all the hate Brian Hoyer gets, he’s actually been a winner over the past three seasons, on some pretty average teams. In 2013 he took over for the awful Cleveland Browns and looked to be the hometown hero.

The Ohio native had the team on a three-game winning streak, but during that third win he suffered a torn ACL and was shelved until the next season. He returned in 2014, and beat out the fan favorite (although that didn’t last) Johnny Manziel for the starting job.

Hoyer went 7-6 as a starter for the Browns, who finished the season 7-9. The team around him was bad and not only could they not win without him that season, but after he left for Houston they went 3-13 and “earned” the second overall pick.

From there Hoyer went to Houston and after struggling in his first game, he was benched. Hoyer acted like a pro and kept working away before winning his job back and leading them to a 5-4 record as a starter (9-7 overall) and a playoff berth.

He came apart in his playoff game for sure, but to his credit after the first few mistakes Hoyer was just playing in desperation mode. The five turnover game was a disaster, but it was also his only time playing in the playoffs, there is a chance he could get better. Although as a backup, hopefully he wouldn’t be needed in the playoffs anyway.
