UCLA. Myles Jack. 7. player. 42.
I’ll be the first to tell you that this isn’t the best or purest scheme fit. If anything, Myles Jack is an undersized linebacker at 225 pounds, and a few teams (most notably the Chargers) have gone public with the thought that he could even play strong safety at the NFL level. In San Francisco, Jack would almost certainly have to play middle linebacker in their 3-4 scheme, and he is probably better suited to being a sideline to sideline player on the outside in a 4-3 defense.

With all of that out of the way, Myles Jack is the best player on the board and San Francisco probably knows that.

Chip Kelly isn’t shy about picking up talent and deploying it in interesting ways, and Jack is so versatile and athletic that it almost doesn’t matter where he plays. With Jaylon Smith’s injury issues, the former UCLA linebacker is now comfortably the top linebacker in the 2016 class, and the 49ers have based their defensive success in the past on this particular position.

Ideally, Chip and company would probably like to emerge from the draft with a quarterback of the future. However, the trade by the Rams probably takes that possibility out of play, so San Francisco will have to “settle” for the consensus top player available. Darn.
. LB
