15 biggest NFL quarterback busts of all-time
By John Buhler
Todd Marinovich was groomed to be a star left-handed quarterback for the USC Trojans and to have a high-octane NFL career. Marinovich’s unique upbringing as the son of the Raiders strength and conditioning coach was highly publicized in high school. The Robo-QB as he was called would star at USC and would be the 24th overall pick by the Raiders in the 1991 NFL Draft.
Marinovich didn’t handle the freedom of college all that well after the strict dietary plans and exercise regiments placed on him by his father. Though Marinovich had great talent to play quarterback in the NFL, substance abuse and frankly disinterest got in the way of his father’s dream.
Once Marinovich beat the Giants in 1991, he essentially had enough of the NFL. He was suspended by the NFL for substance abuse and tried to make it work in the CFL and the Arena Football League. While he got clean in the years that followed, Marinovich was labeled an NFL bust by the time he turned 24.
Marinovich did show flashes of brilliance under center, but he is still today an all-time NFL bust. He finished his short NFL career with 1,345 passing yards, eight touchdown passes, nine interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 66.4.
