TORONTO, ON – DECEMBER 07: Quarterback J.P. Losman /

Tulane Green Wave. J.P. Losman. 13. player. 16. . Quarterback

J.P. Losman was the fourth of four franchise quarterbacks taken in the deep 2004 NFL Draft. Eli Manning went No. 1 to the San Diego Chargers before he was swapped for the No. 4 pick in Philip Rivers of the New York Giants. Ben Roethlisberger would lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to two Lombardi Trophies and there was Losman.

Losman went to the Buffalo Bills after starring for the mid-major Tulane Green Wave with the hopes of being the guy that could appropriately replace Kelly at quarterback in Western New York. Losman would break his foot in 2004 training camp, which hindered his struggles.

While Losman did put together his best year as the Bills’ starter in 2006, Buffalo never sniffed the AFC Playoffs and Losman was frequently benched by the Buffalo coaching staff. In 2005, he was benched in favor of veteran Kelly Holcomb. Then in 2007, he was benched in favor of rookie and third-round pick Trent Edwards out of Stanford.

Losman didn’t care for either the Edwards draft pick or having him usurp him on the Bills quarterback depth chart. He would essentially demand a trade to leave Buffalo after the 2007 NFL season. Losman had to stick it out one more year in Buffalo before becoming a backup quarterback with the Raiders, Seahawks, and Dolphins. He was out of football after the 2011 NFL season.

Losman finished his NFL career throwing for 6,271 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions with a career quarterback rating of 75.6. The 2004 training camp injury set Losman back more than anyone could have imagined. Had he held a clean bill of health as a rookie, maybe he could have had the staying power in the NFL like his fellow first-round quarterbacks of the 2004 Draft Class?
