Dallas Cowboys – Larry Allen (No. 46 pick, 1994)

On one side of the spectrum, we find the Cleveland Browns. On the (complete) opposite side, we find the Dallas Cowboys. To translate, the Cowboys have a bevy of worthy candidates for this honor, and it is a real task to sift through them in search of the best draft value for a franchise with real history.

It will probably shock some readers to see Larry Allen’s name in this space. After all, the Cowboys have employed the likes of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Roger Staubach, Herschel Walker and Bob Lilly (to name a few) and offensive linemen often don’t receive nearly enough credit. Still, Allen’s greatness stands on its own, and the fact that he was the number 46 pick makes his profile even more impressive.

For my money, Larry Allen might be the best offensive guard in NFL history, and he is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame after landing in 11 Pro Bowls as a member of the Cowboys. Allen was an absolutely punishing run blocker that used his size and strength beautifully, and if not for a dominant offensive line during the early 1990’s, the Cowboys would be remembered in a vastly different light.
