Chicago Bears – Richard Dent (No. 203 pick, 1983)

Remember when the NFL Draft had more than seven rounds? Well, Richard Dent does.

The Hall of Fame defensive end was selected in the eighth (!) round of the 1983 draft by the Bears, and that is the biggest reason that he earns this distinction. After all, this organization has featured numerous Hall of Fame level talents in the past, ranging from Walter Payton on the offensive side to Mike Singletary and even Brian Urlacher defensively. Still, Dent was an absolutely monstrous force off the edge in Chicago, and the value here is immense.

During his career, Dent played for the Bears for 12 seasons, and in those dozen years, he picked up 124.5 sacks. For the uninitiated, that is absolutely fantastic production for a defensive end in any era, and he landed in four Pro Bowls during his time in Chicago. It also helps that Dent was a centerpiece of the 1985 team that cruised to a 15-1 season and a Super Bowl victory, and while he is not the household name of several players on that particular roster, Richard Dent had one of the best careers.

When considering the Bears, this probably wasn’t the place where your mind went, but that doesn’t make it the wrong pick.
