Cleveland Browns – Ozzie Newsome (No. 23 pick, 1978)

Breaking down the Browns and Ravens (where we tabbed Ray Lewis previously) is always interesting because of the confluence of the two organizations. Given that Cleveland has had a checkered (to put it mildly) history since returning as an “expansion” franchise, we will go in the way-back machine to pick Ozzie Newsome for this honor, even as he operates as the general manager of, you guessed it, the Baltimore Ravens.

Newsome might be the best player to ever put on a Browns jersey, and that is evidenced by his inclusion in the Pro Football Hall of Fame because of his time in Cleveland. His career numbers (662 catches, 7,980 receiving yards) do not look to be “Hall of Fame worthy” based on current benchmarks for pass-catchers, but this type of production was virtually unheard of from a tight end in the 1980’s and Newsome was a monster for the Browns.

It has to be said that, well, the Browns don’t exactly have a lot of candidates for his honor, and they are a much more entertaining franchise when it comes to draft day busts than successes. Still, Ozzie Newsome fits in with the rest of the 32 choices here, and he should be remembered fondly in Cleveland for his playing career.
