4. Brandon Finnegan-Cincinnati Reds

Finnegan and the Reds open up their series with the Cubs tonight at Great American Ball Park. While it’s a tough matchup, Finnegan has looked good in his first three starts of the season and is still available in 2/3 of ESPN standard leagues.

Finnegan faced the Cubs two starts ago going 6.2 innings and allowing just one hit and two earned runs.  He walked five in that outing but also struck out five while throwing a season-high 111 pitches.  He didn’t get the win in that outing, but he did pick up a win in his last start on Saturday in St. Louis where he only went five innings and gave up four runs (all unearned) on four hits.  Finnegan has an impressive 2.04 ERA and .129 BAA (batting average against), but he has been prone to a bit of wildness with ten walks to go with his 16 K’s in 17.2 innings.

Tonight, Finnegan probably won’t get a win since he has to go up against Jake Arrieta, but he should still give you a solid start at home against the Cubs.  In his only other start at home, he held the Phillies to two runs in six innings walking one and striking out nine. I doubt he’ll duplicate those numbers against a much stronger opponent tonight, but he does have the potential to be a nice plug-and-play option if you need innings with solid WHIP and ERA.
