5. Roman Gabriel

Coming out of college at North Carolina State, Roman Gabriel was one of the best athletes at the quarterback position seen in some time. Both the AFL and NFL were eager for his services.

Despite the fact that he was drafted No. 1 overall in the AFL draft by the Oakland Raiders, Gabriel opted to sign with the Los Angeles Rams, who had taken him with the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft.

In Los Angeles, Gabriel became one of the most beloved quarterbacks in the league. However, he wasn’t given the starting job right away, but had to earn his spot as the quarterback of the Rams. When he finally did take over the starting job for good, Gabriel showed off his cannon of an arm and wowed everyone with what he could do.

In 1969, one of his best seasons, Gabriel was named NFL MVP. He led the Rams on an 11 game win streak to start the season, one of their best overall seasons to date.

His time as a starter didn’t last as long as many of the other great quarterbacks in the NFL, but the impact he made in his time with Rams can’t be understated.
