LOS ANGELES, CA – CIRCA 1970: Defensive tackle Merlin Olsen /

1. Merlin Olsen

In the 1960s the Los Angeles Rams had one of the most feared defenses of all time and that was because of a group known as the “Fearsome Foursome.” The group consisted of Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy, Rosey Grier and perhaps the greatest draft pick in the history of the Rams: Merlin Olsen.

Olsen was one of the most imposing defensive tackles in the two decades he played in the league and he was also the most consistent defensive tackle as well. In his career, Olsen made the Pro Bowl an astounding 14 times, which is tied for an NFL record.

He received many accolades in his career besides the monstrous stats that he racked up. He was part of the All-Decade teams in the 60s and 70s and was also part of the NFL’s 75th anniversary team. With Olsen, the Rams consistently won the NFC West and were contenders for the Super Bowl every single season.

They were tops against the run on multiple occasions and were just as deadly at rushing the quarterback. Although they never won a Super Bowl in Los Angeles, the Rams had so much success with Olsen and the rest of their defensive line that they will forever be remembered in history.

He would be voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and he would have a great broadcasting career after his playing days. He has since passed on, but his legacy will live forever in football and with the Rams.
