5 replacements for Mike Tirico on Monday Night Football
By John Buhler
1. Sean McDonough
As soon as it was announced that Tirico was leaving ESPN/ABC after 25 years worth of work, it seems that ESPN’s leading candidate to replace him in the Monday Night Football booth is Sean McDonough.
McDonough has done mostly radio play-by-play, covering everything from the Boston Red Sox to college football/basketball to golf. He’s done NFL play-by-play in two separate instances, first with CBS from 1991 to 1993 and now on ESPN Radio since 2013.
If McDonough is indeed the broadcaster ESPN chooses to replace Tirico with in the Monday Night Football booth, the television network will likely need to replace him in doing college football games. This will be because of the commitment to doing television work for a program as big of a national staple as is ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
Could ESPN look to replace Tirico from outside of the Disney/ESPN/ABC umbrella? They could, but with Disney’s profits slipping from several bad investments, mostly Shanghai Disney, bleeding into television shows and now possibly even into sports, a promotion from within is all the more likely. Don’t be surprised if McDonough is tabbed as the man to replace Tirico in the Monday Night Football booth before too long.
