5. Kevin Gausman-Baltimore Orioles

Gausman is a risky play tonight, but he is a great pickup if you’re in one of the 75% of ESPN leagues where he is still on the waiver wire.  Gausman is high-risk since he is making his season debut after working this way back from a shoulder injury.

He looked strong in his rehab picking up 19 K’s while issuing just five walks, and he threw 91 pitches in Triple-A on Wednesday.  He showed plenty of promise last season especially at home where he was 3-1 with a 2.19 ERA. He also was t his pest as the season went on including going 2-1 with a 3.90 ERA in six September starts.

Unfortunately, he’s on the road tonight in Tampa against a Rays team that knocked him around last season for ten runs in 10.2 innings.  His matchup and his return from injury makes him a high-risk, high-reward play as a one-day pickup, but he’s definitely worth adding in leagues where you can hold him for a while going forward with the O’s strong lineup behind him.
