Kansas City Chiefs – Todd Blackledge (No. 7 pick, 1983)

Todd Blackledge is exceptional as a college football analyst on television and has been for some time.

Todd Blackledge was not exceptional as an NFL quarterback.

Blackledge was picked by the Chiefs with the seventh pick in the legendary 1983 quarterback class, but he ended up being the worst investment of them all and that burned Kansas City in the long term. The organization passed on the likes of Jim Kelly and Dan Marino (in addition to Tony Eason and Ken O’Brien) to make this selection, and while Blackledge wasn’t the worst quarterback imaginable, he certainly was not on the level as some of the others in his draft class.

Over the course of five years and 40 games under center, Blackledge accumulated 32 interceptions and just 24 touchdown passes, while completing only 49 percent of his passes. He never appeared in every game during a season, and the Chiefs punted on the experiment following the 1987 season.

For the most part, the Chiefs have done a quality job in avoiding picks that would make national news, but this one wasn’t ideal by any stretch of the imagination.
