Chicago Bears – Curtis Enis (No. 5 pick, 1998)

This was a photo finish. Chicago’s first round investment in quarterback Cade McNown was an unmitigated disaster. McCown was the 12th pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, but was with the organization for only two years before flaming out in spectacular fashion. Still, the Bears actually made an uglier pick when they took Curtis Enis fifth overall in the 1998 draft.

For starters, picking a running back in the top five is almost always a bad idea; at least in the case of McNown, the team was swinging for the fences at the game’s most important position. Beyond that, the career of Enis could not have gone worse from start to finish.

The former Penn State running back began his career with a lengthy holdout, appearing in only nine games as a rookie in 1998. From there, Enis was absolutely awful from a production standpoint, averaging only 3.3 yards per carry before injury issues forced him out of the league after only three seasons.

It is unfathomable that a top five pick would play only three years, but the knee issues that hampered him during a failed move to fullback (!) wouldn’t allow Enis to continue playing football. If you have friends that are Bears fans, I wouldn’t advise bringing up his name in casual conversation.
