29. Orlando Magic – Fran Vazquez (2005)

This Spanish big had spent his formative years playing for Malaga in Spain’s top tier. In his draft eligible year, he averaged 11.1 points and 6.3 rebounds, and before that won a silver medal during the FIBA Under-20 Championship in 2002. The Magic clearly thought there was enough talent there to pick him at 11th overall.

Magic fans couldn’t wait to see their new look frontcourt with him and Dwight Howard, but that had to wait at least another year. Vazquez announced he would stay in Spain, which makes sense if he wanted to develop his skillset further, but he never came back. All the while, the Magic retained his NBA rights.

It was a wasted pick, and they could’ve easily used their selection on the likes of Danny Granger, Jarrett Jack, or Gerald Green, all of whom were chosen later in the same draft.

It’s a wonder why Vazquez never decided to play in the NBA – something every player strives towards – and get the opportunity of a lifetime by pairing up with Dwight Howard. It’s something we’ll never really know the answer to but perhaps he could never truly adapt to North American culture and preferred the much simpler life of playing in the Spanish ACB.
