NBA Draft: Every NBA team’s worst draft pick
By David Rouben
26. Los Angeles Lakers – Javaris Crittenton (2007)
D’Angelo Russell could eventually take this spot, but for now Javaris Crittenton is well deserving of it. Of course, he’s better known for his off-court problems, but as a first-round Lakers pick, he was a big disappointment.
In 22 games played, he averaged 7.8 minutes a game to a total average of 3.3 points, 1 rebound, and 0.8 assists. Instead of going for Arron Afflalo and Tiago Splitter, they chose Crittenton, who was dealt within a year. The silver lining here is that he was included in a trade that brought Pau Gasol to the Lakers, who would help win them back-to-back championships.
The reason Crittenton’s NBA career was so short-lived was because of his off-field issues. Before he was charged with murder, he was suspended for pulling a gun on Gilbert Arenas in the locker room while with the Wizards. Prior to that, he hadn’t even played a single minute for Washington, so it’s not like they were missing anything with him out of the lineup.
After Crittenton was accused of murder, it was discovered that he had joined the Crips after he became a Laker. In addition, he was also found guilty of various drug charges. The L.A. lifestyle is not for everyone, it would appear, and the Lakers are definitely glad they got rid of him before he became a problem.
