2. Terrell Davis, Running Back (Round 6, Pick 196, 1995)

Remember those draft picks that came well after John Elway was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1983 NFL Draft? When I said those picks were the root cause for the Broncos’ back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1997 and 1998, I was referring to running back Terrell Davis, Contrary to what many narratives will tell you, Davis was the catalyst for Denver getting over the hump and winning a Super Bowl.

Despite being taken just before the seventh and final round of the 1995 NFL Draft, Davis wasted little time making a huge impact. In his rookie year he rushed for 1,117 yards (averaging 4.7 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns. That was only the beginning, though. He went on to rush for 1,750 yards and 15 touchdowns on the way to the Super Bowl in 1997 and a monstrous 2,008 yards and 21 touchdowns on the way to the second Super Bowl.

Davis was truly a remarkable player that led the way — whether he gets credit for it or not — in the most successful two years in Broncos history. Considering how late in the draft Denver got him, he must go down as one of the greatest picks in the history of the franchise.
